Introducing PELT: A Training Program for Ontario’s Printing Industry
The Ontario Printing & Imaging Association (OPIA) is developing a groundbreaking initiative for Ontario: the Print Entry-Level Training (PELT) program. The PrintForward Printing & Imaging Association implemented PELT in British Columbia several years ago in order to address the critical need for skilled, entry-level workers in the printing, mailing, and packaging sectors. Participants will gain hands-on experience in essential areas such as bindery, finishing, folding, packaging, direct mail, and customer service. With PELT, OPIA aims to equip individuals with the practical skills they need to start their careers in the printing industry.
This 8-10 week program will be fully funded by the government, allowing participants to complete their training at no cost. Each session will train about 25 individuals, giving them the foundational skills to be job-ready upon graduation. Graduates will receive a PELT Certificate, signifying their readiness for employment in various entry-level roles across the sector.
Securing Funding: We Need Your Endorsement
Although the OPIA has designed a comprehensive training curriculum and lined up resources, funding for PELT is not yet secured. The association is actively applying for government funding to bring this program to life. However, a critical component of the application process is demonstrating broad industry support for PELT. This is where we need your help.
Written endorsements from companies within the printing and graphic communications industries will significantly strengthen our funding proposal. By providing a brief statement on why you believe PELT is essential for the future of our industry, you can help us show the government the urgent need for this training program. Your endorsement will highlight the industry’s commitment to building a skilled workforce, which is essential for the sustainability and growth of the sector in Ontario.
Why PELT Matters: Addressing Industry Challenges
The printing industry is evolving rapidly, and companies are increasingly seeking employees with specialized skills. Unfortunately, many new entrants to the job market lack the practical experience and technical knowledge needed to thrive in the sector. PELT aims to bridge this skills gap by offering targeted training that meets the current demands of the industry.
In addition to classroom learning, PELT will offer on-site tours and demonstrations at various printing facilities across the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). This hands-on approach will provide participants with a deeper understanding of industry practices and allow them to see the latest technologies in action. By preparing a new wave of skilled workers, PELT will help companies grow, innovate, and remain competitive in the global market.
How You Can Support PELT
OPIA is calling on companies and industry leaders to show their support for the PELT program by providing a written endorsement. Here’s how you can help:
- Endorse the Program: Submit a brief statement explaining why PELT is essential for the printing industry. Your endorsement will support our funding application and demonstrate a collective commitment to workforce development.
- Commit to Hiring Graduates: Consider hiring PELT graduates for entry-level positions. By doing so, you’ll not only fill critical roles within your organization but also help ensure the program’s success.
- Host Training Sessions or Facility Tours: Offer your facility as a venue for training sessions, tours, or hands-on demonstrations. This provides participants with real-world experience and helps them connect with potential employers.
- Provide In-Kind Contributions: Contribute equipment, materials, or other resources needed for training. These donations will enhance the learning experience for participants.
- Serve as a Guest Instructor: Share your expertise by leading a class or workshop. Your industry insights can inspire and guide the next generation of print professionals.
Supporting PELT is more than just a commitment to training; it’s an investment in the future of the printing industry. Together, we can build a skilled workforce that meets the demands of a rapidly changing market.
